4 Monos GR-10 Tinto 2023
92/100 WA

Tasting Notes

Pale to medium ruby.

On the nose: Highly aromatic, with fresh raspberries, cherries and cranberries. Violets, lilac and rose petals add floral notes, alongside a hint of black pepper and granitic minerality.

On the palate: Light-to-medium-bodied, juicy and vibrant, with sour cherries, pomegranate and bramble berries echoing the nose. The finish is long and savory, with a saline edge and subtle spice.

Serving: Best served at 55–59°F (13–15°C). Serve it cool to highlight its vibrant acidity and wild red fruit while keeping the natural spice balanced. Decant for 15–30 minutes, or simply pour into a large glass, to help release its floral and herbal aromas.

Food pairing: Pair with tapas and charcuterie, cured meats, aged cheeses, roast chicken or turkey, or grilled pork tenderloin. Vegetarian options include mushroom risotto, roasted eggplant, root vegetables and lentils.

The 4 Monos GR-10 Tinto 2023 is a "village level" red (Vino de Sierra) from the Sierra de Gredos mountains, in the hills west of Madrid. It is made by four friends, the "4 Monkeys," and named after the GR-10 hiking trail that runs through the Gredos mountains on its way between Lisbon and Valencia.

This is a fresh, high-altitude take on Garnacha (90%, with 10% Cariñena and Syrah) that drinks more like a delicate Pinot Noir or a Northern Rhône Syrah than a heavy Spanish red. The organically farmed vines grow on sandy granite soils at 700 to 830 meters, and the Garnacha vines are up to 100 years old. Raspberry, cherry and cranberry come with violets, lilac and rose petals, then pomegranate and bramble berries with a hint of black pepper. The finish is savory, long and slightly salty, with a touch of spice. It is hand-harvested, fermented mostly whole-cluster, aged in old French oak and bottled without filtration.

Why buy it: it's a light-to-medium-bodied, juicy red with real character at an everyday price, so it works for people who usually avoid heavy reds. It's also a great introduction to the Gredos mountains, one of the most talked-about areas in modern Spanish wine.

When to open it: a tapas night with cured meats and aged cheeses, a roast chicken or turkey dinner, or grilled pork tenderloin. It's also a good partner for vegetarian dishes such as mushroom risotto, roasted eggplant, root vegetables or lentils. Easy enough for a casual get-together and interesting enough to talk about. Try it lightly chilled on a warm Florida evening.
